‎New UBTH CMD Assumes Office, Vows to Prioritize Staff Welfare and Infrastructure

‎By Prosper Mene

‎Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu has officially resumed as the new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), marking a historic moment as the institution’s first female CMD.

‎In her inaugural address, Prof. Ize-Iyamu outlined a bold vision to enhance staff welfare and modernize the hospital’s infrastructure.

‎Speaking to staff and stakeholders upon resuming office, Prof. Ize-Iyamu emphasized her commitment to improving working conditions for UBTH’s workforce. “A motivated and well-supported staff is the backbone of quality healthcare delivery,” she stated, promising to address longstanding concerns about remuneration, training, and workplace resources.

‎Her pledge is coming at a critical time for the hospital, which has faced challenges related to staff morale and operational efficiency.

‎The new CMD also highlighted plans to upgrade UBTH’s infrastructure to meet global standards. This includes modernizing medical equipment, improving patient care facilities, and adopting innovative healthcare technologies. “Our goal is to make UBTH a center of excellence where both patients and staff thrive,” she added.

‎Prof. Ize-Iyamu’s appointment follows the tenure of her predecessor, who was celebrated for maintaining an eight-year strike-free period and implementing significant reforms.

‎Her leadership is expected to build on these achievements while tackling emerging challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare sector.

‎Dr. Osasuyi Ehigiator, a senior medical officer, noted, “Her focus on welfare is encouraging. We hope to see tangible improvements in our working conditions soon.” Patients, too, are hopeful that the promised upgrades will translate to better care and shorter wait times.
