The Edo State Government, under Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, has commissioned the reconstructed Oredo Girls Secondary School in Benin City, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing education reform efforts.
On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Governor Okpebholo officially unveiled the fully rebuilt facility located at Awo Street, off First East Circular Road. The school, which had suffered years of abandonment and dilapidation, has been transformed into a modern learning environment. This redevelopment brings an end to prolonged neglect, restoring dignity to public education and providing students with conducive classrooms and essential facilities.
The commissioning shows the governor’s commitment to revitalizing public schools across Edo State. Since assuming office, his administration has prioritized infrastructure rehabilitation as part of broader reforms, including the declaration of a state of emergency on public education in March 2025. Similar efforts have seen the reconstruction of other institutions, such as Army Day Secondary School and Evbareke Secondary School, with over 68 schools rebuilt or rehabilitated in the administration’s first year. These interventions have attracted new enrollments, with some rehabilitated schools gaining hundreds of students from private institutions due to improved quality.
This project aligns with the governor’s “EduRescue Initiative” and Five-Point Agenda, aimed at equipping students with quality education, vocational skills, and future-ready opportunities. It underscores the administration’s focus on practical governance, ensuring that Edo’s children learn in safe, inspiring spaces rather than decaying structures.
The unveiling has been celebrated as a promise kept, with residents and education stakeholders praising the swift action to restore abandoned facilities. As one of the recent achievements in the state’s education turnaround, the reconstructed Oredo Girls Secondary School stands as a symbol of renewed hope and investment in the next generation.
