Male DJs think we get gigs because of looks – DJ Pretty Play

By Prosper Mene

Nigerian disc jockey DJ Pretty Play has opened up about the persistent gender biases faced by female DJs in the music industry, asserting that many male counterparts attribute their success to physical appearance rather than skill and talent.

In a recent interview, the Lagos-based DJ, known for her energetic sets and ambition to break records (including a planned attempt at the Guinness World Record for DJ marathon), highlighted how women in the field are frequently sexualized and undervalued.

“Most of the time we are being sexualised,” she stated. “Some male DJs believe female DJs get gigs because of their physical appearance, not because of their talent or hard work.”

DJ Pretty Play emphasized that female DJs are talented professionals deserving of respect and equal opportunities, rather than being viewed as “commodities to be exploited.” She called for a shift in perceptions within Nigeria’s male-dominated DJ scene, where such stereotypes undermine women’s credibility and contributions.

Her honest words shine a light on the real struggles female DJs face in Nigeria’s music scene. Through hard work and real skill, DJ Pretty Play is building her name and showing that success comes from talent—not just looks. Voices like hers are helping change how the industry sees and treats women behind the decks.
