By Prosper Mene

A devastating tragedy has struck the community of Ogidi in Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, where five siblings have lost their lives due to suspected food poisoning, leaving their mother in critical condition in a local hospital. The heartbreaking incident, has sent shockwaves through the community and prompted an urgent investigation by local authorities.

According to reports, the victims, all children from the same family, consumed a meal that is believed to have been contaminated, leading to their sudden deaths. Their mother, who also partook in the meal, was rushed to an undisclosed hospital where she is currently fighting for her life. The exact cause of the poisoning remains under investigation, with authorities yet to confirm the source or nature of the contamination.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, confirmed the incident in a live social media video, expressing deep sorrow and appealing to the public for guidance on how to support the grieving family. “This is a tragic loss for the family and the entire community. We are doing everything possible to uncover the cause and ensure justice,” she stated, as cited by credible news outlets such as Punch Nigeria and Vanguard News.

Local police, led by the Anambra State Police Command, have launched a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths. SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, noted that samples from the meal consumed by the family have been sent for laboratory analysis to identify the toxic substance. The police have also called on the public to provide any information that could aid the investigation.

This is not the first such incident in Anambra State; in August 2024, a mother and her four children in Abubor Nnewichi died from suspected food poisoning after consuming a meal, highlighting a recurring issue.

As the community mourns, tributes have poured in for the young lives lost, with neighbors describing the children as vibrant and full of promise. “This is a pain no one can bear. We pray for their mother’s recovery and for strength for the family,” said a local resident, who requested anonymity.

The state government has promised to support the family and ensure that those responsible for any negligence or foul play are brought to justice. Meanwhile, health officials are urging residents to exercise caution with food preparation and storage, emphasizing the importance of hygiene to avoid contamination.
