‎Nigerian female football player kidnapped

By Prosper Mene

shocking incident has rocked Nigeria’s women’s football community as Ihotu John Rebecca, a talented player for Pacesetter Queens FC in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Premiership, was reportedly kidnapped along the Benin Expressway.

The abduction occurred last Friday while the young athlete was traveling home following the conclusion of the first half of the league season. Her club, based in Oyo State, had recently released her and several other players for a break. Sources indicate that unknown gunmen carried out the attack on the notorious highway, a route known for security challenges.

Her abductors have since contacted the family, demanding a ransom of ₦20 million  for her safe release. The family, led by her mother Blessing John, learned of the incident when a stranger answered Rebecca’s phone. They have made an urgent public appeal for assistance from well-meaning Nigerians, football stakeholders, sponsors, government officials, and sports authorities to help secure her freedom.

The Oyo State Government has responded by launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the kidnapping. Commissioner for Youth and Sports indicated that authorities are actively probing the case, with potential for state intervention if needed.

This development has sparked widespread concern across Nigeria’s sports scene, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by athletes, particularly female players, who often travel long distances by road for matches, training, and personal commitments. Social media has been flooded with calls for action, including appeals to the Nigeria Police Force and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde to prioritize her rescue.

Rebecca, described as a dedicated professional who has represented women’s football at the domestic level, remains in captivity as of March 2, 2026. Her family and supporters continue to plead for swift intervention to ensure her safe return without harm.

Football fans and the public are urged to share information responsibly and contact relevant authorities. Her mother’s contact numbers have been circulated in some appeals: 07064207130 and +2348116515588.

This incident exposes the broader security issues in parts of Nigeria and the vulnerability of citizens pursuing their passions. Updates are expected as authorities and the family work toward her release.
