By Prosper Mene

A saddening incident has struck the quiet community of Ute in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, where a mother and her child were fatally crushed by a grader on Monday, according to the Ondo State Police Command.

The police confirmed the tragic deaths in a statement, noting that the incident occurred in Ute, a small community in the state’s northern region. While details surrounding the circumstances of the accident remain limited, sources indicate that the grader, a heavy machine typically used for road construction or maintenance, was operating in the area when the tragedy unfolded.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of shock and grief as residents gathered at the site, grappling with the sudden loss of two lives. The identities of the deceased have not been disclosed, pending notification of their family members. The police have assured the public that investigations are underway to determine the cause of the accident and to ascertain whether negligence or mechanical failure played a role.

“This is a heartbreaking incident, and we are working diligently to uncover the facts,” a spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command said. “We urge the public to remain calm and allow the authorities to handle the matter.”

The tragedy sparked calls from community leaders for improved safety measures in areas where heavy machinery is in use, particularly in residential zones. Residents have expressed concerns over the lack of clear signage or barriers to protect pedestrians in such areas.

While the investigation is ongoing, the people of Ute mourn the loss of a mother and her child, with many in the community rallying to support the grieving family. The Ondo State Police Command has promised to provide updates as more information becomes available.
