NYSC Is Getting a Major Overhaul: 7 Big Changes Every Future Corps Member Should Know

By Prosper Mene

The National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, is set for its first major reform in 53 years after the Federal Executive Council, FEC, approved sweeping changes to the scheme on Monday.

President Bola Tinubu’s administration says the overhaul will reposition NYSC from just a “mobilisation exercise” into a skills-driven, productivity-focused and youth-empowering institution.

Here are the major changes every future corps member should note:

1. 11 Specialised Career Streams

Corps members will now pick from 11 specialised streams at registration based on academic background and skills. The streams include: Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, Tech & Digital Corps, Legal Corps, Public Service Corps, Infrastructure Corps, Green Corps, Enterprise Corps, Creative Economy Corps, and Paramilitary & Security Corps. Training will be tailored to each stream.

2. Six-Week Orientation Camp

The orientation programme is being extended from 3 weeks to 6 weeks. It will be split into 3 phases: 2 weeks for civic responsibility & leadership, 2 weeks for career mapping, finance & business planning, and 2 weeks for stream-specific training. Camp standards nationwide will also be upgraded through a national grading and certification system.

3. Skills-Based Primary Assignment

Posting will now align with your course of study and career goals. For longer certification courses like Tech/Digital, corps members will remain in training instead of being posted immediately.

4. Civilian Leadership, Military for Security

NYSC will now be headed by a civilian Director-General, supported by 3 Executive Directors. The military will continue to provide security for corps members nationwide.

5. No More Passing Out Parade

The traditional Passing Out Parade is scrapped. It will be replaced with a formal graduation ceremony. There’s also a redesigned NYSC uniform to reflect “professionalism and national pride”.

6. Risk-Sensitive & Tech-Driven Deployment

Deployment will now consider security realities in different states to better protect corps members. The call-up process will also be fully digitalised.

7. New Certificate Requirement from 2026 Batch B

From 2026 Batch ‘B’ Stream 1, all Prospective Corps Members must present a compliance certificate from the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank, NERD, to curb certificate fraud.

What Officials Are Saying

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, described it as “an investment in Nigeria’s greatest asset, our young people”. The FEC has directed the Attorney-General to amend the NYSC Act to give legal backing.

The reforms take effect after legislative amendments, with full implementation expected between 2026 and 2028.
