‎NYSC Corps Member Breaks Silence on Brutal Assault by Anambra Vigilantes

‎A female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Edema Elohor, has spoken out about a harrowing assault she endured at the hands of operatives from the Anambra State Vigilante Group, known as Operation Udo Ga-Achi or Agunechemba Vigilante Group, in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

‎ The incident occurred on July 23, 2025, and gained widespread attention after a viral video surfaced on Monday. It has sparked outrage across Nigeria, prompting condemnation from the NYSC, the Anambra State Government, and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

‎ ‎In a video shared on social media, Ms. Elohor detailed the traumatic experience, recounting how armed vigilantes stormed a corps members’ lodge, accusing the occupants of internet fraud despite their display of NYSC identification cards and uniforms.

‎The operative allegedly beat her, tore her clothes, and left her partially unclothed, ignoring her pleas for mercy. The disturbing footage, uploaded by the Haven 360 Foundation, showed Ms. Elohor being subjected to humiliating and degrading treatment, triggering calls for justice.

‎Speaking out for the first time, Ms. Elohor expressed her anguish, stating, “I was humiliated and treated like a criminal for no reason. I was only visiting the lodge, and they didn’t care about my NYSC identity. This is a national shame.” Her account aligns with reports from a former corps member, Unity from Delta State, who served in Onitsha North LGA between 2021 and 2022. Unity described frequent hostility from vigilantes, noting, “They didn’t care if you were a corps member. I had to outsmart them to avoid trouble.”

‎ ‎The NYSC condemned the assault as “unacceptable and dehumanising,” with Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, emphasizing that no justification warrants such treatment.

‎The organization is providing psychological and physiological support to Ms. Elohor and supporting the ongoing police investigation to ensure justice.

‎ ‎The Anambra State Government has taken swift action, confirming the arrest and detention of the operatives involved. Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, described the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” saying that the operatives were part of a joint task force pursuing suspected cultists. He noted that while the operation was legitimate, the vigilantes’ conduct was indefensible. The government has suspended the operatives and is conducting investigations to determine whether internal disciplinary measures or prosecution are warranted.

‎ ‎Nonye Soludo, the governor’s wife, also condemned the assault, calling it a violation of Anambra’s values of hospitality and peace. She demanded a thorough investigation, stating, “Such a demeaning approach to law and order does not reflect our administration’s humane philosophy.” The NBA has called for the prosecution of the perpetrators, with President Afam Osigwe stressing that justice must serve as both redress for Ms. Elohor and a deterrent against future abuses.

‎The Anambra state police have urged corps members to report harassment and warned vigilante groups against brutality, emphasizing that such misconduct will not be tolerated.

‎Mother, Son Among Four Killed in Fresh Benue Attack

‎Grief has swept through Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State following a deadly attack by suspected armed herdsmen that claimed the lives of four people, including a mother and her son, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.

‎

‎The brutal assault, which occurred in the Egwuma and Ogbai communities, has left residents tearful and stirred renewed calls for action to curb the escalating violence in the state.

‎According to local sources, the attackers stormed the communities in a coordinated midday assault, targeting villagers who were working on their farms. Among the victims were a woman and her son, killed while tending to their crops in Egwuma. Two others were fatally attacked in the neighboring Ogbai community. A resident, who identified himself only as Inalegwu, recounted the horror: “Some herdsmen attacked Egwuma and Ogbai today. They killed a woman and her son on their farm and two others in Ogbai. Two people are still missing, and we’re searching for them.

‎The Chairman of Agatu LGA, Melvin James, confirmed the killings, describing the act as “senseless and barbaric.” He expressed frustration over the challenges faced by security operatives, citing poor road conditions as a significant obstacle. “The security operatives in Agatu are doing their best, but the bad roads make it difficult. At the time of the attack, they were on surveillance in other areas,” James explained.

‎The attack is an addition to the string of violent incidents in Benue State, including a devastating assault in Yelewata, Guma LGA, in June 2025, where over 200 people were reportedly killed. Just two weeks prior, on August 11, three more lives were lost in Yelewata, prompting protests by local women demanding better security.

‎The recurring violence, often attributed to suspected Fulani herdsmen, has fueled accusations of ethnic cleansing and land-grabbing, with community leaders like Professor James Ayatse, the Tiv traditional ruler, rejecting the narrative of a mere herder-farmer clash.

‎Residents lament the lack of timely security intervention, with many pointing to the absence of personnel during critical moments. The Benue State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Udeme Edet, noted she had not yet received a report on the incident due to being on an official tour but promised to provide updates.

‎Anambra First Lady Invites Brutalized NYSC Member, Condemns Assault

‎Dr. Nonye Soludo, the first lady of Anambra state, has extended an invitation to Miss. Jennifer Elohor, a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member who was brutally assaulted by operatives of the state’s Agunechemba Security Outfit, also known as Udo Ga-Achi. 

‎The invitation is a reaction to a viral video that sparked widespread outrage, showing Elohor being beaten, stripped, and humiliated by the vigilante group in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area, on July 23, 2025.

‎ ‎Dr. Soludo condemned the incident as “heartbreaking, unacceptable, and disturbing,” emphasizing that such actions do not reflect Anambra’s values or the administration’s principles.

‎While making a statement, she said, “There is no justification whatsoever for such an ugly and humiliating abuse. Law enforcement must always be guided by dignity, civility, and respect.” She reached out to Elohor to sympathize and invited her to the Government House in Awka to discuss the incident and offer support, though Elohor noted she was temporarily out of the state but would reconnect upon her return.

‎ ‎The assault which was captured in a video circulated widely on social media, showed armed operatives storming a corps members’ lodge, accusing Elohor and others of being internet fraudsters despite their presenting valid NYSC identification and uniforms. The operatives’ actions, including beating Elohor and tearing her clothes, leaving her exposed, drew condemnation from the public, the NYSC, and organizations like The Haven Foundation, which demanded justice and comprehensive reparations for the victim.

‎ ‎In response, the Anambra State Government acted swiftly. Governor Soludo dismissed eight operatives involved in the assault, and they have been arrested and handed over to the police for prosecution. Ken Emeakayi, Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, described the operatives’ actions as “totally outside the mandate of the agency and utterly condemnable.” The state has also covered Elohor’s medical bills, replaced her damaged valuables, including a laptop and phone, and issued a public apology to her family, the NYSC, and the public.

‎ ‎Dr. Soludo urged security agencies to ensure justice and implement measures to prevent such incidents, stating, “This incident will serve as a turning point in reforming community security operations in Anambra State.” The case has stirred calls for stricter oversight of vigilante groups and increased protections for corps members nationwide.

‎Son of Norwegian Princess Faces 32 Charges in High-Profile Case

‎Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, was indicted on August 18, 2025, facing 32 criminal charges, including four counts of rape, domestic violence, assault, vandalism, death threats, and violations of restraining orders.

‎The charges, announced by Norwegian prosecutors, comes from a year-long investigation into incidents allegedly occurring between 2018 and 2024, with a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years if convicted.

‎Høiby, the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, is not a royal by title and holds no official duties or place in the line of succession.

‎His mother’s 2001 marriage to Haakon brought him into the public eye, and this case has garnered significant attention in Norway.

‎The investigation began after Høiby’s arrest in August 2024 for allegedly assaulting a girlfriend in an Oslo apartment, where he is also accused of causing significant property damage. As the probe expanded, authorities uncovered allegations of additional crimes, including a rape charge added after the initial arrest.

‎Among the charges, prosecutors allege Høiby secretly filmed the private parts of multiple women without their consent, actions described as causing “lasting scars” by public prosecutor Sturla Henriksbø.“This is a serious case with many victims,” Henriksbø stated during a press conference in Oslo. “The defendant’s connection to the royal family should not affect how the case is handled. He will be treated like any other individual under the law.” The indictment details incidents involving multiple women, with charges ranging from physical assaults to psychological abuse and breaches of court-issued restraining orders.

‎Høiby, through his defense attorney Petar Sekulic, has admitted responsibility for the August 2024 assault and vandalism, attributing his actions to intoxication from alcohol and cocaine, as well as ongoing struggles with mental health and substance abuse.

‎In a statement released through his legal team, Høiby expressed regret, saying, “I deeply regret the harm caused and am committed to seeking help.” However, he denies the more severe accusations, including rape and domestic violence, though he plans to plead guilty to some lesser charges.

‎The Norwegian royal palace has maintained a restrained stance, issuing a brief statement: “This is a legal matter, and we trust the judicial process to handle it appropriately.” The case has placed the royal family in a delicate position, as public interest intensifies ahead of a trial set to begin in mid-January 2026, expected to last approximately six weeks. Høiby remains free pending the trial, with prosecutors indicating that the case’s complexity and the number of charges will require a thorough judicial review.

‎Salesgirl Arrested for N29M Theft from Minna Phone Shop

‎Authorities have apprehended 23-year-old Sarah Ogbonna for allegedly stealing N29 million in goods and cash from a phone shop at Obasanjo Complex in Minna.

‎The Niger State Police Command announced the arrest following a two-year investigation into the systematic theft.Ogbonna, who a salesgirl at the shop since 2023, is accused of siphoning off high-value phones and funds, which she used to finance a luxurious lifestyle, including an apartment in Sauka-Kauta for her boyfriend, Samuel Abiodun Bello.

‎Police also recovered items purchased with the stolen funds, including two generators, a smart TV, a freezer, wigs, shoes, bags, and furniture.Three accomplices were detained: Ruth Omor Emmanuel, 23, a former colleague; Mercy Ogbonna, 30, Sarah’s sister; and Nurudeen Musa, 32, who allegedly sold stolen phones at reduced prices.

‎During questioning, Ogbonna confessed to the theft, revealing she was unaware the total amounted to N29 million. She also admitted to investing N150,000 weekly in an online financial scheme.

‎SP Wasiu Abiodun, Police Spokesman, confirmed the arrests and stated that investigations are ongoing, with charges pending. The shop owner’s prompt reporting led to the breakthrough, showing the importance of vigilance in business operations. The police continues their search for Bello and urge the public to provide any information that could aid the case.

‎Nigeria Adopts Menstrual Health Policy to Combat Stigma and Boost Girls’ Education

‎The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted its first-ever National Policy on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM).

‎The policy, validated by stakeholders at a meeting in Abuja, aims to eliminate stigma surrounding menstruation, improve access to affordable sanitary products, and ensure girls can stay in school during their periods.

‎Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, described the policy as a transformative step toward ensuring that menstruation does not hinder the potential of women and girls. Represented by Dr. Maryam Keshinro, the minister highlighted the urgency of the initiative, noting that women aged 15 to 49 make up 25 to 30 percent of Nigeria’s population, with millions managing menstruation monthly. “Menstruation is a normal biological process that should never be a source of shame, stigma, or economic hardship,” she stated.

‎The policy will address critical challenges, including inadequate access to sanitary products, poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, and cultural taboos that contribute to school absenteeism and health issues. A key feature of the policy is the removal of taxes on sanitary towels, a decision championed by President Bola Tinubu, which is expected to make menstrual products more affordable. The initiative also seeks to integrate menstrual health education into school curricula and gender equality programs, with a vision that by 2030, no girl in Nigeria will have to choose between managing her period and pursuing her education.

‎The minister emphasized the policy’s benefits for national development, stating, “Menstrual health is not just a women’s issue but a family, community, and national development issue.” She highlighted alarming statistics, including that 15 percent of girls aged 15 to 19 are already mothers or pregnant, and over 7.3 million adolescent girls and women suffer from undernutrition, conditions worsened by poor menstrual hygiene.

‎The policy aims to empower communities by fostering open dialogue and breaking cultural taboos.The adoption of the MHHM policy aligns Nigeria with global leaders like Kenya, Scotland, and New Zealand, which have implemented measures to provide free or affordable menstrual products and education.

‎By prioritizing menstrual health, Nigeria is taking a bold step toward ensuring that girls and women can thrive without the barriers of stigma or lack of resources.‎

‎The Federal Government called for strong collaboration across sectors and active participation from states, communities, and development partners to ensure the policy’s successful implementation.
