2023 Elections: Online Resource Portal Unveiled For Women Aspirants

Women politicians under the aegis of Women In Politics Forum (WIPF) has unveiled an online resource portal for women seeking elective positions in the 2023 general elections.

During the unveiling of the project tagged: ‘Nigerian Women Aspirants Website’, financed by an international human rights organization. WIPF also said that the mode of party primaries was not enough to bring the needed change expected to be seen in the country’s political process.

According to them, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), and the National Assembly must take electoral reforms seriously.

The event was attended by many women including an aspirant for the Benue State House of Assembly and chairperson, League of Women Voters in Nigeria, Irene Awunah; Country Director of ActionAid Nigeria, Ene Obi; Executive Director of 100 Women Lobby Group, Felicia Onibon and Executive Director of Payeodi, Jophia Gupar.

The President of WIPF and renowned gender activist, Ebere Ifendu, told Journalists that the time had come for women to use the 2023 election as a moment to right many wrongs such as marginalisation and injustices against women.

She said, “We had high expectations that the Electoral Bill would have been assented to by the President, unfortunately, that did not happen. We are in support of direct primaries, where every registered party member participates to choose their flag bearers.

“This would have opened up the space and made it more inclusive of women, youth and persons with disability.

“Considering that the mode of primaries is not enough to discard the Electoral Bill, we, therefore, call on the National Assembly, on resumption, to make the necessary changes to the Bill and forward to the President for his assent.

“We also urge Mr President to assent to the amended Electoral Bill as soon as it is represented for his assent.

“The 2023 elections are crucial and will determine the future of our electoral process.”

According to her, there had been a decline in the number of women elected into political offices from 5.6 per cent in 2015 to 4.7 per cent in 2019.

Ifendu however said all hands must be on deck to reverse the downward trend.

She said, “Lots of speculation exists as to why there was a decline in the percentage of elected female officials as opposed to the increase experienced between the 2011 to 2015 period.

“In order to address this decline, several civil society organizations, including WIPF, implementing partners and donor organizations have set different innovative projects to reverse these downward trends.

“And as you are aware, candidates are already declaring interest to contest at various levels in the 2023 general polls, including women. So, the website is set to provide accurate data about women in the poll and to answer significant questions surrounding the increase or otherwise of women’s participation in the Nigerian political scene.”

The Country Director of UN Women, Ms Comfort Lamptey, represented by its Programme Specialist (Women’s Leadership and Participation), Desmond Osemhenjie, said the United Nations had commenced the mobilisation of six million Nigerian women to participate in the continuous voters’ registration exercise by the end of the first quarter of 2022.

She said, “We are already in seven states working to ensure that before the end of the first quarter of this year, about six million women are registered through the INEC platform that is already ongoing.”

Facebook, Instagram Accused of Rejecting Women’s Health Ads

A recent report by non-profit organisation Center for Intimacy Justice (CIJ) done together with pelvic health start-up Origin has claimed that Facebook parent company Meta rejects ads on women’s health while allowing ads by men’s sexual wellness companies with sexual innuendos to run on Facebook and Instagram. According to the report, the categories of start-ups with rejected ads included menopause, pelvic pain, pregnancy or postpartum care, menstrual health, fertility, sexual wellness, education, and others. Meta commonly classified these health ads as “adult products” and the report claimed that “Meta appears to apply this policy unevenly”.

Ads from companies including VFit, Intimate Rose and Genneve were said to be censored by Meta. On the other hand, the report said that ads with sexual innuendos from men’s sexual wellness brands such as Hims and Manscaped were allowed to run on Meta’s platforms.

Of the 60 businesses studied in the report, all of them (100%) had experienced Facebook or Instagram rejecting an ad. Half of survey respondents also reported Facebook suspending their entire ad accounts. According to the report, 59 of the businesses were founded and led by women while the one business was led by a non-binary individual.

CIJ said that 44 women’s health companies participated in the survey and 42 of those had attempted to advertise on Meta. The survey was also distributed through women’s health founder networks on LinkedIn and by email. According to the report, Google, TikTok, and other ad platforms were also included in the survey and found to have rejected ads.

CIJ explained that the importance of changing Meta and tech platforms’ discriminatory policies is “far-reaching” because of the sexual health information access benefiting women and people of diverse genders. Doing so will also create a culture of equity and well-being in intimacy, as well as tech advancement and investment or funding for health of women and people of diverse genders, CIJ explained in its report. MARKETING-INTERACTIVE has reached out to CIJ and Meta for comment.

Agnes Aileluelohia-Creativity powered by technology is the future of agencies

The COVID-19 pandemic has irreversibly changed the advertising landscape, therefore agencies, in particular, should recreate customers’ experience to correspond with changing customer expectations. In fact, creativity enshrouded in technology is the future of today’s agencies.

The above assertion was made by Agnes Ailuelohia, the Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of First Katalyst Marketing Limited.

Assessing the marketing and advertising ecosystem in view of the impact of the new normal, the experiential marketing expert noted that, today’s consumers have high degree of expectations, hence the need for agencies to embrace digital apps in their journey towards consumers’ satisfaction. She urged them to adopt convenient business models by integrating and leveraging technology to help foster competitive advantage and also build better products and services for customers’ engagements and interactions.

Citing Peter Drucker’s maxim, “innovate or die”, Mrs. Ailuelohia mentioned that, technology is the panacea for any business growth. “If we look at the world today, it is all about digitization. If there is one thing that Covid-19 has taught us, it has more or less accelerated the digital agenda for us. In the same way, agencies need to position themselves in such a way that there is a lot more in terms of innovation and thinking outside the box. It is about creatively steering adaptive strategies that work for us.”

She added that digital technology has the potential to boost more inclusive and sustainable growth by spurring innovation, and helping agencies to confront and recover from the pandemic, which has disrupted economies and societies globally.

“It is about digitizing operations for adequate information on data analysis and consumer insights, as well as developing skill set in a bundle of talents, data, technology and creativity for the future. Agencies need to move from the point of waiting for a brief, to a point of getting briefs by themselves through data, which is basically insights.”

Speaking on decline in advertising spend, the general manager explained that ad spend had already dropped pre-Covid-19, adding that clients’ disposition for now is to meet up with the lost transactions. “The decline began before Covid-19, indicating that a portion of the advert budget is below the marketing budget. This is because a lot of clients are looking at how to make new contacts and make quick return on investment for their brands. Clients are a bit more cautious; however, they are also trying to gain the time lost.”

Women and Relevant tips in Handling their homes

To the upcoming married women or to the women that are already married, below are some of steps to follow to having a happy marriage for their lifetime.

1. Look for someone with similar values

“For long-lasting love, the more similarity (e.g., age, education, values, personality, hobbies), the better. Partners should be especially sure that their values match before getting into marriage.

Although other differences can be accommodated and tolerated, a difference in values is particularly problematic if the goal is long-lasting love.

Another secret for a long marriage: Both partners need to commit to making it work, no matter what. The only thing that can break up a relationship are the partners themselves.”

2. Never take your partner for granted

“This may sound obvious, but you can’t imagine how many people come to couples therapy too late, when their partner is done with a relationship and wants to end it.

It is very important to realize that everyone potentially has a breaking point, and if their needs are not met or they don’t feel seen by the other, they will more than likely find it somewhere else.

Many people assume that just because they are OK without things they want so is their partner. ‘No relationship is perfect’ shouldn’t be used as a rationalization for complacency.”

 3. Stop trying to be each other’s “everything”

“‘You are my everything’ is a lousy pop-song lyric and an even worse relationship plan. No one can be ‘everything’ to anyone. Create relationships outside The Relationship, or The Relationship isn’t going to work anymore.”

4. Do or say something daily to show your appreciation

“Saying and doing small, simple expressions of gratitude every day yields big rewards. When people feel recognized as special and appreciated, they’re happier in that relationship and more motivated to make the relationship better and stronger.

And when I say simple, I really mean it. Make small gestures that show you’re paying attention: Hug, kiss, hold hands, buy a small gift, send a card, fix a favorite dessert, put gas in the car, or tell your partner, ‘You’re sexy,’ ‘You’re the best dad,’ or ‘Thank you for being so wonderful.’”

5. Make sure you’re meeting your partner’s needs

“The number one thing I have learned about love is that it is a trade and a social exchange, not just a feeling. Loving relationships are a process by which we get our needs met and meet the needs of our partners too.

When that exchange is mutually satisfying, then good feelings continue to flow. When it is not, then things turn sour, and the relationship ends.

That is why it is important to pay attention to what you and your partner actually do for each other as expressions of love… not just how you feel about each other in the moment.”

 7. Don’t forget to keep things hot

“Many times people become increasingly shy with the person they love the more as time goes by. Partners begin to take their love for granted and forget to keep themselves turned on and to continue to seduce their partner.

Keep your ‘sex esteem’ alive by keeping up certain practices on a regular basis. This allows you to remain vibrant, sexy, and engaged in your love life.”

 6. Don’t just go for the big O

“Sex isn’t just about orgasms. It’s about sensation, emotional intimacy, stress relief, improved health (improved immune and cardiovascular system), and increased emotional bonding with your partner, thanks to the wonderful release of hormones due to physical touch. There are many more reasons to have sex than just getting off.”

 8. Remove the pressure on performance

“The penis-vagina model of sex comes with pressures, such as having an orgasm at the same time or the idea that an orgasm should happen with penetration. With these strict expectations come a pressure on performance that ultimately leads many to feel a sense of failure and frustration.

Instead, try to expand your concept of sex to include anything that involves close, intimate connection with your partner, such as sensual massages, taking a nice shower or bath together, reading an erotic story together, playing with some fun toys… the possibilities are endless.

And if orgasm happens, great, and if not, that’s OK too. When you expand your definition of sex and lower the pressure on orgasm and penetration, the anxiety around performance dissipates and your satisfaction can escalate.”

 10. Try a nicer approach

“Research has shown that the way a problem is brought up determines both how the rest of that conversation will go and how the rest of the relationship will go. Many times an issue is brought up by attacking or blaming one’s partner, also known as criticism, and one of the killers of a relationship.

It’s not what you fight about — it’s how you fight

“Researchers have found that four conflict messages are able to predict whether couples remain together or get divorced: contempt, criticism, stonewalling (or withdrawal), and defensiveness.

Together, they’re known as ‘The Four Horsemen.’ Instead of resorting to these negative tactics, fight fairly: Look for places where each partner’s goal overlaps into a shared common goal and build from that. Also, focus on using ‘I’ versus ‘you’ language.”

Communication is the key to a healthy relationship. However, many people aren’t certain what they should be communicating about. Spend time talking about a variety of topics to grow together as a couple and to prevent your relationship from becoming stale.

  1. Your Daily Activities

All of your conversations don’t have to be earth shattering. Spend time talking about your day-to-day activities. Discuss what time you woke up, what you ate for lunch, or what you discussed with a co-worker and help your partner understand what happens when you’re apart.

2.Money

Talk about your budget. Discuss your saving and spending habits. If you combine your finances, set some financial goals and discuss strategies to help you reach those goals.

 3. Places You Want to Explore

Start a conversation about the places you’d like to visit. Whether you want to travel to your grandmother’s house or you want to go on a cruise around the world, a discussion about travel can spark a lot of new conversation.

  1. Emotional Growth

Share some information about your emotional growth. If you notice you’ve become wiser, less reactive, or more compassionate, share that with your partner. Point out the emotional growth you see in your partner as well.

  1. Individual Goals

It’s healthy to have individual goals. Whether you want to lose weight, learn how to prepare Chinese food, or learn how to line dance, set some goals for yourself and discuss those goals with your partner.

How Fulfilled Are You In Your Life?

If you want to stop struggling and live life to the fullest, Life hack has a solution for you.

  1. Spiritual Beliefs

Start conversations about your spiritual beliefs. Be willing to listen to your partner’s beliefs and be open to talking about the similarities and differences in your beliefs.

  1. What You’re Watching on TV

Although watching TV isn’t an active way to grow together as a couple, discussing what you’re watching can help you learn something new about one another.

  1. Politics

You don’t have to agree on politics in order to have a discussion about it. You can learn a lot about your partner if you have a conversation about politics. Any healthy relationship should allow each partner to feel respected enough to share an opinion, even if it opposes the other partner’s opinion.

 9. Goals to Address as a Couple

Discuss the goals you want to reach together as a couple. All healthy relationships should include shared goals for the future. Whether your goal is to volunteer at a homeless shelter together or save enough money for a new car, working together to reach your goal can help you stay close as a couple.

  1. Your Past

Your partner doesn’t need to know every skeleton in your closet. However, sharing information about your past can be very helpful. Talk about your childhood, past experiences, or obstacles you’ve overcome. You can also share how much you’ve learned and changed over the years.

  1. Your Values

It’s important to share your values with one another. Talk about your priorities in life. It’s important for your partner to know how you feel about work, family, education, friends, and leisure time. Let your partner know what types of things you value the most and what changes you may want to make to ensure that you’re living according to your values

 12. Your Dreams

Daydreaming together can be a great activity in any healthy relationship. Discuss dreams you had as a child, dreams you’ve let go, and dreams you still hold onto.

  1. Your Feelings

Of course, talking about your feelings is an important part of communication. Be willing to share your joys and sorrows with your partner. Also, be willing to talk about what makes you feel angry, when you’re disappointment, and when you feel embarrassed or hurt.

14. Family

Whether you’ve got a close relationship with your family or not, talking about family can be important. It can give your partner an inside look at what type of childhood you had as well as what type of relationship you have with your family members. Discuss how you want your family to be different from your family of origin, as well as which aspects you want to replicate.

  1. Your Relationship

Discuss the aspects of your relationship that are working well and make sure to also discuss problematic areas. Talking openly about your relationship can ensure your relationship stays fresh and exciting.

Kitchen Tips And Tricks

As a woman, atimes we get disturbed and find it difficult on how to get some kitchen tricks and tips in our various homes.

I’ve been able to gather some kitchen tricks and tips that will be helpful. Below are some kitchen tips and tricks for homes

1. Empty bad tasting palm oil in a deep pot boil until the little drops of water left behind dry up and the oil retains it’s good taste.

2. When making amala, semo and wheat meal fufu, add some drops of vegetable oil to the boiling water before adding the flour and stirring. That gives a smoother fufu swallow without lumps and fluffy and prevents some from sticking to the bottom of your cooking pot.

3. After boiling spaghetti or macaroni, rinse with clean water to remove starch and your spaghetti remains free flowing and non sticky. You can also drop some oil and salt to the boiling pot to prevent some sticking together.

4. You can boil rice with much water, drain excess when rice is cooked and enjoy free non-sticky grains.

5. Add seasoning cube and salt to boiling rice and you can enjoy it without stew or sauce.

6. Chop or dice vegetables like okra, ugu, afang, ewedu and others, store in the freezer for as long as you want and when it’s time to use, do not defrost, just go ahead and cook your fresh vegetables and enjoy.

7. Drop moi moi broad leaves in the freezer, leave them frozen and hard for as long as you want, when it’s time for moi moi making or ofada rice, rinse and use your fresh looking leaves.

8. For accidents with hot pots or kitchen disasters with fire while cooking, apply your baking flour immediately and it will heal without a scar.

9. Parboil beans and rinse like rice before cooking to avoid heart burns.

10. Chop and blend peeled raw yam before stirring in the pot like amala for quick poundo.

11. Use pressure cooker for cow head, cow leg and others to quick cook, avoid putting metals like nails for your health sake.

12. Start chewing gum or an empty mouth before you start chopping the onion to avoid tears. If you put even a little cut on the onion before you begin to chew, it might not work as onion juice travels fast and may have reached your eyes already.

13. For salty boiled yam, add more clean water and drain before serving.

14. For Quick akara balls or moin moin, wash your beans as usual, dry very well and mill or grind. Store bean flour in airtight containers. Take the quantity needed at any given time and just mix with water, add other ingredients and cook with no stress.

15. To make ogbono soup that’s thick but not too drawy, fry the ogbono after grinding.
Crayfish is the medicine for ogbono soup. Without meat or fish, add enough crayfish and enjoy delicious ogbono soup.
Too much crayfish, oil and onion too can reduce the drawy strength of your ogbono soup.

16.Adding butter or vegetable oil to boiling pot gives nice texture to your boiled rice.

17. Close containers tight immediately after use to preserve your ingredients.

18.Female cow head takes really long to cook and Nigerians have started to use paracetamol tablets to make it cook faster. PLEASE ASK YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT THIS TRICK. Paracetamol is medicine and if we start cooking it as food, what happens when we fall ill and the body is already saturated with paracetamol? Disaster. Please use pressure pot for tough meats. Save and get one for your health sake.

19.Drop peeled irish potatoes in your pot of salty soup and warm to remove the salty taste.

20. Blend raw yam, wrap in cellophane bags and drop in boiling water to cook and your poundo is ready but cooking with nylon bags is not healthy so I’ll go with blending and stirring like amala.

21. Use a food blender for ewedu instead of broom or potash.

22. To prevent your unripe plantain from ripening, keep in a bowl of water for as long as you want them to remain unripe, take them out when you want to ripen.

23. Lick salt as soon as pepper from the tough meat accidently enters your eye while struggling to bite. Salt calms the pepper immediately.

24. Keep your yams head down and tails up to prevent them from germinating and growing in the store room.

25.Sprinkle some salt on fresh pepper while pounding to prevent your pepper jumping out the mortar and landing on the floor or your eyes.

26. Drop boiled eggs immediately in cold water to help with the shells.
27. Add salt to boiled eggs to harden and prevent cracks.

28. Boiling eggs straight from the fridge can cause cracks.

29. Freeze crayfish to preserve,
Sun dry very well, clean and store crayfish in airtight containers and they can last for a year or more.

30. Wash eggs with detergent before boiling to harden the shells and prevent cracking.

31. Sprinkle some raw garri or flour to your watery soup to thicken.

32. Without food blender? Use a grater to wash and skin beans in seconds for your akara or moin moin.

33. Parboil washed beef with seasoning and onion only till dry, before adding water. That’s how to get the taste.

34. Wash snails with lime orange to remove slime and harden.

35. Drop washed snails in already salted boiling water to harden and cook nicely.

36. Blend boiled yam for your smooth poundo. Great for small families o. Don’t ruin your blender grinding yam for battalion.

37. For lingering onion and garlic smells that refuse to go away even after washing hands, rub your palms on a stainless steel like the kitchen sink and it clears off.

38. Use iron sponge to clean smoked fish or dip in hot water and use salt to scrub off all the sand and dirt.

39. To reuse cooking oil, fry some ginger in it first and the taste of whatever that was cooked disappears leaving you with good oil.

40. To prevent cut ripe fruits like apples, avocados, cut ripe plantains from changing to brown, sprinkle the cut area with lemon juice. Sprinkle cut ripe plantains with lemon juice and store in the fridge to use later, the cut area remains fresh.

40. If two drinking glasses become stuck together
after stacking or during cleaning, it’s possible to unstick them. Just put ice in the inner glass and place the outer glass in warm water. The warm glass will expand and the cold glass will contract, making the glasses separate easily.  That’s easy.

41.For your burnt pot of rice. Place a piece of white bread on the hot rice, place the lid back on and leave for about 5 minutes to absorb all that smell. Open, take out the bread, then serve and enjoy

I hope these above tips will be helpful.
