Iyabo Ojo Faces EFCC Over Naira Abuse at Daughter’s Lavish Wedding

By Prosper Mene

Renowned Nollywood actress Iyabo Ojo, fondly called the Queen Mother, has revealed details of her recent interaction with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) concerning the spraying of currency at her daughter’s high-profile wedding. The star-studded event, tagged #JP2025, saw guests showering both Naira and foreign currencies, prompting the anti-graft agency’s attention.

In a statement shared via Instagram, Ojo disclosed that she honored an EFCC invitation on May 5, 2025, where officials presented videos from the wedding of her daughter, Priscilla Ojo, to Tanzanian singer Juma Jux, held on April 17, 2025, in Lagos. The footage captured guests, including celebrities and friends, engaging in the cultural practice of spraying money, which the EFCC flagged as a potential violation of Nigeria’s laws against Naira abuse. Ojo recounted being questioned about her awareness of the illegality of such actions, an experience she described as both enlightening and sobering.

“I was shown videos where guests were spraying Naira and foreign currencies at my daughter’s wedding,” Ojo said, commending the EFCC for their professionalism and candor during the session. She noted that she was released the same day after providing clarity on the matter. The actress did not disclose whether further actions would be taken by the agency but used the opportunity to caution Nigerians against the practice of money spraying at events. “Let’s be mindful to avoid trouble,” she advised, urging her fans and the public to reconsider the tradition to steer clear of legal repercussions.

The wedding, a blend of Nigerian and Tanzanian cultures, was a spectacle that dominated social media, with notable moments including music executive Soso Soberekon spraying 100-dollar bills on Ojo and comedian Kamo State flaunting cash he collected from the event. The celebration, which included a traditional ceremony, a white wedding, and plans for a grand finale in Tanzania, also saw Ojo and her ex-husband, Ademidun Ojo, reunite in matching outfits to support their daughter.

An X user While commending Ojo’s response said: “She honored the invitation, acknowledged the offense, and educated her audience about the consequences of flouting the law.”

This incident follows a growing trend of EFCC scrutiny over Naira abuse, with recent cases involving other public figures. Iyabo Ojo remains a prominent voice advocating for compliance with Nigeria’s financial regulations.
