In a good gesture of support, the Oyo State Police Command on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, presented cheques totaling N20.12 billion to 7,076 widows of slain police officers in the state. The ceremony, held at the Police Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, was a poignant moment of recognition for the sacrifices made by the fallen officers and their families.
The financial disbursement, facilitated under the Inspector General of Police’s Family Welfare and Group Life Assurance Schemes, aims to alleviate the economic hardships faced by the widows and their dependents. The initiative reflects the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to supporting the families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Speaking at the event, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola, described the gesture as a token of appreciation for the fallen heroes’ dedication to protecting lives and property. “While no amount can replace the loss of a loved one, we hope this support will provide some relief and help secure a better future for the families,” he said. Adenola urged the beneficiaries to utilize the funds wisely, particularly in investing in education and sustainable ventures for their children.
The presentation follows a series of similar efforts across Nigeria, with states like Kebbi and Niger recently disbursing millions to families of deceased officers. In Oyo, the event was attended by senior police officials, representatives of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), and community leaders, who commended the police leadership for their compassion.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Grace Akanmu, expressed gratitude on behalf of the widows, noting that the funds would significantly ease the financial burdens faced by many families. “This support means so much to us. It shows that our husbands’ sacrifices are not forgotten,” she said, visibly moved.
The Oyo State Police Command reiterated its commitment to the welfare of its officers’ families, with plans to continue advocating for improved funding and support systems. The initiative has been hailed as a step toward addressing the long-standing challenges faced by the families of Nigeria’s fallen security personnel.
