The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has initiated a probe into controversial Nigerian singer Darlington Okoye, popularly known as Speed Darlington, following a viral Instagram Live video in which he allegedly admitted to engaging in a sexual encounter with a 15-year-old girl. The announcement was made on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, sparking widespread outrage and condemnation across social media platforms.
In the video, narrated in Igbo, Speed Darlington reportedly recounted an incident that occurred approximately a decade ago at an unnamed hotel. He claimed the minor, who he alleged was a virgin at the time, was left bleeding after the encounter, and he paid hotel staff N2,000 to replace the bloodied sheets. The graphic nature of his confession has drawn sharp criticism and prompted swift action from authorities.
The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) was the first to respond, issuing a statement acknowledging the disturbing video. However, as Speed Darlington did not disclose the location of the alleged incident, the DSVA noted that its jurisdiction is limited to Lagos State and referred the case to NAPTIP for further investigation. The agency emphasized its commitment to justice, stating, “The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency is aware of the disturbing video currently circulating online, in which a popular entertainer allegedly admits to engaging in unlawful sexual activity with a minor.”
NAPTIP confirmed that its Cybercrime Response Team is analyzing the viral video alongside other related content attributed to the singer. The agency called on the public to provide any information that could aid the investigation, showing the seriousness of the allegations.
On their X handle, NAPTIP posted, “This is not a skit right? If not, we are sure #LagosDSVA will look into this to the very end,” to which the DSVA replied, “We are in this together o!” signaling a collaborative effort between the two agencies.
Speed Darlington, known for his provocative lyrics and controversial persona, has faced similar allegations in the past. In 2022, he reportedly had a confrontation with a neighbor who accused him of inappropriate conduct with a 16-year-old girl, further fueling public scrutiny of his behavior.
Following the backlash, Speed Darlington issued a statement claiming the confession was intended to generate controversy to promote a new song. However, this explanation has done little to quell public outrage, with many Nigerians expressing shock and demanding accountability. An X user posted, “Who the gods wants to kpai, they will first make him mad… Investigation is Ongoing now!”
Both NAPTIP and DSVA have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward as the investigation continues.
