‎Swedish Health Minister Collapses During First Press Conference on Day One in Office

By Prosper Mene

‎Sweden’s newly appointed Health and Social Affairs Minister, Elisabet Lann, fainted and collapsed onstage during a government press conference today, just moments after being introduced to her new role.

‎The incident, captured on live video, sent shockwaves through the room and quickly went viral on social media. The press briefing, held at the start of the 2025-2026 parliamentary session, featured Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and other top officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch. Lann, a member of the Christian Democrats (KD), had only been in her position for a matter of hours, having been hastily appointed following the sudden resignation of her predecessor, Acko Ankarberg Johansson, on Monday.

‎ Johansson, a veteran KD politician, stepped down from both her ministerial post and her seat in the Riksdag despite recently applying for re-election, citing personal reasons in a social media announcement.

‎Footage of the collapse shows Lann standing at the podium, appearing unsteady as she began addressing reporters on Sweden’s healthcare challenges. She had just remarked that “Swedish healthcare is of high quality; the main issue is the long waiting times,” and emphasized the need for stronger government control to address inefficiencies in the welfare state.

‎Suddenly, she slumped forward, toppling the lectern and hitting her head before collapsing to the floor. Onlookers, including Busch and government security personnel, rushed to her aid, with Busch placing her in the recovery position as calling for an ambulance.

‎The conference was immediately canceled, and Lann was escorted out for medical attention. A reporter from Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter (DN), who witnessed the event firsthand, described it as “really bad,” noting that Lann fell right in front of them.

‎However, Lann returned to the stage shortly afterward, reassuring attendees with a lighthearted comment: “This was not exactly a normal Tuesday, and this is what can happen when you have a blood sugar drop.”

‎She appeared unharmed and stable, with no reports of serious injury.Prior to her appointment, Lann served as a municipal councilor in Gothenburg, where she focused on healthcare issues. She holds a master’s degree in peace and development studies and political science and has been active in the KD’s executive committee.

‎Her swift elevation to the national stage comes amid ongoing debates over Sweden’s healthcare system, including efforts to nationalize services and reduce waiting times, a priority for the Christian Democrats since they joined the coalition government in 2022.

‎Prime Minister Kristersson thanked Johansson for her contributions, particularly in areas like civil defense healthcare and the national cancer strategy, but provided no further details on her resignation.

‎ Lann’s agenda, as outlined before the incident, includes pushing for greater government oversight to tackle long queues and ensure equitable access to care.

‎The event has stirred widespread concern and speculation online, with some users linking it to broader health issues, though Lann’s explanation points to a simple hypoglycemic episode.
