The recent passing of Vivian Nkechika, a dedicated broadcaster with the Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS) in Asaba, has sent shockwaves through the Delta State media community.

Nkechika, known for her professionalism, commitment, and impactful voice on air, was the second journalist from the state to pass away within a short period, following the earlier death of PUNCH correspondent Matthew Ochei in January 2026.

In a heartfelt response, Delta State Commissioner for Information, Charles Aniagwu, expressed profound sorrow and extended his deepest condolences to the family of the deceased, her colleagues at DBS, and the broader Delta State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Aniagwu described the loss as deeply painful, highlighting Vivian’s unwavering dedication to her craft and her positive influence within the media landscape. He prayed for divine strength and comfort for her grieving family, friends, and the entire journalism fraternity in the state during this difficult time.

This tragic event exposes the emotional toll on media practitioners, who often form tight-knit professional families.

The commissionerโ€™s gesture of solidarity shows the government’s recognition of the vital role journalists play in informing and shaping public discourse in Delta State.

The media community continues to mourn and remember Vivian Nkechika for her contributions, with many calling for support systems to address the welfare and well-being of those in the profession. May her soul rest in perfect peace.
