President Bola Tinubu  brought laughter and warmth to the Presidential Press Corps Dinner with a playful tribute to his wife, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

In his remarks at the State House, Abuja, the President referred to the First Lady as “My dear wife, First Lady, Iya Alakara (Mama Akara Seller)”, drawing cheers and applause from journalists, government officials and guests at the annual dinner.

The light-hearted moment came as President Tinubu appreciated members of the Presidential Press Corps for their role in nation-building and for keeping Nigerians informed about government activities.

The First Lady, who sat beside the President, smiled and waved in response to the teasing, which many in attendance described as a reflection of the couple’s cordial relationship.

“Iya Alakara” is a Yoruba term of endearment meaning “Mother of Akara Sellers.” The phrase is often used to celebrate hardworking women, particularly market women, and has become closely associated with Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s advocacy for women’s empowerment and grassroots economic development.

Speaking further, President Tinubu commended the media for holding government accountable, while urging journalists to continue to report responsibly and contribute to national unity.

The Presidential Press Corps Dinner is held yearly to strengthen relations between the Presidency and journalists covering the State House.

Guests at the event included members of the Federal Executive Council, heads of security agencies, and senior media executives.
