Dr. Nonye Soludo, the wife of Anambra State Governor, has unveiled an ambitious initiative to establish pad banks in 300 schools across the state, a key component of her Healthy Living Initiative. The program aims to promote menstrual hygiene and ensure access to sanitary products for female students, addressing a critical need in school communities.
The pad banks, strategically set up in schools across Anambra, are designed to provide free or subsidized sanitary pads to female students, reducing absenteeism due to lack of access to menstrual products. Dr. Soludo emphasized that the initiative is part of her commitment to improving the health and well-being of young girls, empowering them to focus on their education without the burden of menstrual poverty.
“This is about dignity, health, and education. No girl should miss school because she cannot afford sanitary pads. By establishing these pad banks, we are creating a supportive environment for our girls to thrive,” Dr. Soludo said during the unveiling ceremony.
The Healthy Living Initiative, championed by the First Lady, focuses on promoting holistic wellness, including physical, mental, and social health. The pad bank project has been lauded as a practical step toward addressing gender-specific challenges and fostering inclusivity in education.
School administrators and community leaders have welcomed the initiative, noting its potential to positively impact female students’ attendance and confidence. The state government has also expressed support for the program, with plans to explore partnerships to ensure its sustainability.
Dr. Soludo’s efforts hopefully are expected to inspire similar initiatives in other regions, as stakeholders continue to advocate for policies that address menstrual health and gender equality in education.
