Olori Janet Afolabi, CNN award-winning journalist and Queen of Apomu Kingdom, has brought relief and joy to the people of Apomu by distributing 150 bags of 50kg rice in celebration of the Ileya Festival. The distribution, which took place on June 3 at the Palace of the Alapomu of Apomu in Isokan Local Government Area, Osun State, marked the launch of the Olori Janet Afolabi Foundation Food Bank, a new initiative aimed at addressing hunger in rural communities.
Speaking at the event, Olori Afolabi emphasized the urgent need to combat the growing hunger crisis affecting rural families. “This food bank is a direct response to the challenges of food insecurity,” she said. “Every package of rice represents moments of relief. We are not just meeting a basic need, we are offering compassion, care, and kindness. We are filling hearts with hope because every act of kindness, no matter how small, can have a profound impact.”
The initiative came right at a time when rising food costs have placed significant strain on many households, particularly in rural areas where most residents are petty traders and peasant farmers. The food bank will not only distribute food but also provide nutrition education and counseling to support indigent families. Olori Afolabi’s efforts are part of her commitment to improving the well-being of her community, building on her previous initiatives such as interest-free loans for market women, campaigns against teenage pregnancy, and cultural preservation projects like the Adire Festival.
The Alapomu of Apomu, Oba Kayode Adenekan Afolabi, commended his wife’s dedication to community development, noting that the food bank aligns with Apomu’s rich cultural heritage and historical significance as a commercial hub in Yorubaland since the 16th century. “This initiative reflects our commitment to uplifting our people and ensuring no one goes hungry during this festive season,” he said.
Residents of Apomu expressed gratitude for the gesture, with many highlighting the timely support ahead of the Ileya Festival, a significant cultural and religious celebration. The Olori Janet Afolabi Foundation Food Bank is expected to continue its efforts beyond the festival, offering sustained support to vulnerable families and reinforcing the queen’s legacy of compassion and community empowerment.
