‎Oyo State Head of Service Encourages Retirees to Adopt Healthy, Active Lifestyles

‎Retirees in Oyo State have been urged to embrace healthy and active lifestyles to enhance their physical and mental well-being, prevent premature aging, and combat social isolation.

‎This call was made by the Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, mni, and former Secretary to the State Government/Head of Service, Chief Adebisi Adesola, during an Elders’ Hangout organized by the Association of Retired Heads of Service and Permanent Secretaries of Oyo and Osun States at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) in Ibadan.

‎Speaking through the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Audu Akeem, Mrs. Oni emphasized the Oyo State government’s commitment to improving retirees’ welfare. She commended the retirees for their significant contributions to the advancement of the state’s civil service and encouraged them to remain productive for a fulfilling retirement. “The government values your legacy and is dedicated to supporting you,” she said.

‎Chief Adebisi Adesola amplified this sentiment, urging retirees to engage in meaningful activities to stay vibrant and connected. The event, which was attended by over 90 association members, also included remarks from Chief Bayo Oyero, an elder statesman and organizing committee chairman, who stressed the importance of regular health check-ups and community involvement.

‎ “To prevent premature aging and isolation, let us engage in meaningful activities and visit our doctors regularly,” Oyero advised, describing the hangout as a gesture of gratitude for the retirees’ service.

‎A highlight of the event was a lecture by Dr. Augustine Okesola titled “Understanding Oral Health: Beyond Just Teeth.” Dr. Okesola emphasized that good oral health is integral to overall well-being, helping to prevent systemic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. He advised retirees to maintain regular dental check-ups, practice daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, floss consistently, stay hydrated, and avoid tobacco to prevent gum disease and oral cancer. He also recommended a balanced diet and treatments like crowns or implants for dental issues.

‎The event included a facility tour of IITA and the presentation of Octogenarian Awards to three association members, celebrating their longevity and contributions.

‎The gathering showed the importance of community engagement and proactive health management for retirees to lead fulfilling lives.
