Foluke Adeboye, the wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has shared a striking personal testimony about her early days as a born-again Christian. In a resurfaced video interview with Gold Maker TV that’s gaining widespread attention online, she revealed why she dramatically discarded her valuable gold jewellery by throwing it into a lagoon shortly after her conversion.

Adeboye explained that before becoming born again, she had a deep passion for fashion and had invested significantly in gold items, including pieces she prepared for her young child who was under two years old at the time. She also mentioned transitioning to alternatives like copper jewellery when gold became less accessible.

However, upon joining the RCCG and embracing the faith fully, the church’s teachings at that period made wearing earrings and gold jewellery a “taboo.”

“Every woman loves fashion,” she recounted. “For example, I had already made a set of gold and all kinds of things for my child who was under two years before we became born again. But the moment we were born again, then in RCCG, it was a taboo for you to have earrings. So everything, we dropped it in the lagoon.”

She noted that the decision was challenging, given the financial and sentimental value of the items. A friend of her mother even suggested she give the jewellery away for sale or to family members rather than destroy it, saying, “You should have given all these to your mother so that she can go and sell it.” Adeboye stood firm, reasoning that if the items were not suitable for her due to her faith convictions, they were not appropriate for others either.

The story shows the radical lifestyle changes and personal sacrifices many early converts in certain Pentecostal traditions made to align with strict holiness standards, including modesty and separation from worldly adornments. The resurfaced clip has caused discussions across social media about faith, consecration, and evolving church practices over time.
