By Prosper Mene

Nigerian sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan delivered a commanding performance on Wednesday night, storming to victory in the women’s 100m hurdles to secure Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 CAA African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra.

The world record holder in the event clocked a time of 12.83 seconds to claim her third consecutive African title in the 100m hurdles, having previously triumphed in Asaba (2018) and Mauritius (2022). Amusan dominated the race at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, underlining her status as Africa’s premier hurdler.

Fellow Nigerian Adaobi Tabugbo complemented the strong showing with a bronze medal in the same event, contributing to Nigeria’s impressive medal haul on Day 2 of the championships.

The gold medal was presented to Amusan by World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, adding extra prestige to the victory.

Known affectionately as the “Tobi Express,” Amusan has once again proven why she remains a dominant force in African and global athletics. Her latest triumph boosts Team Nigeria’s campaign at the continental showpiece, which runs from May 12 to 17.

This result comes as no surprise to fans and analysts, as Amusan had breezed through the heats and semi-finals with authority. Her performance not only kicks off Nigeria’s gold medal account but also reinforces her legacy as one of the country’s most decorated track athletes

Nigeria recorded multiple medals on Day 2, signaling a potentially strong overall showing at the championships. The event also featured notable performances from other athletes, including South Africa’s Luvo Manyonga, who continued his comeback with gold in the men’s long jump.

Congratulations poured in from across Nigeria and the athletics community for Amusan’s latest achievement, with many hailing it as another proud moment for Nigerian sports.
