‎According to a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, on Monday, July 7, 2025, Gambo, a second-year student in the Department of Material and Metallurgical Engineering and a native of Kogi State, was apprehended on July 2 at his student lodge in Nsukka following an intelligence-led investigation. Atiku Applauds Senator Natasha’s Courage, Commends Justice Nyako for Nullifying

By Prosper Mene

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has praised Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for her bold challenge against her six-month suspension from the Nigerian Senate, describing it as a significant victory for democracy and women’s representation.

In a statement shared on his verified social media handle, Atiku also commended Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja for her courageous ruling in overturning what he called an “obnoxious” and unconstitutional suspension. The Federal High Court, in a judgment delivered on Friday, July 4, 2025, nullified the suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, deeming it excessive and a violation of her constituents’ right to representation. Justice Nyako ruled that the six-month suspension exceeded the 181 days lawmakers are expected to sit in a legislative cycle, effectively denying Kogi Central adequate representation. The court ordered the Senate to immediately recall the senator to her legislative duties.

Atiku, in his statement, hailed Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan for “not sleeping on her rights” in a chamber where women are already marginalized. “I commend Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja, for the courage in lifting the obnoxious suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central),” he wrote. “I also hail Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan for challenging the illegality of her suspension by standing firm against what she believed was an injustice.”

However, the ruling was not without controversy. Justice Nyako also found Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan guilty of contempt for posting a satirical apology on her Facebook page on April 27, 2025, directed at Senate President Godswill Akpabio, despite a court order barring public comments on the case. The court fined her ₦5 million and ordered her to issue unconditional apologies in two national newspapers and on social media.

The Senate, while acknowledging the court’s ruling, stated that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s reinstatement is conditional, though specific conditions were not detailed in initial reports. The Action Collective, a civic advocacy group, praised the judiciary’s decision, calling it a “resounding affirmation” of the courts as a refuge for the oppressed and urging Nigerians to seek redress through legal means.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, reacting to the judgment, expressed gratitude for the court’s decision in a post on X, emphasizing her commitment to serving her constituents. The ruling has sparked widespread discussion, with many, including Atiku, viewing it as a step toward upholding justice and protecting women’s rights in Nigerian politics.

Peru’s President Boluarte Faces Backlash After Doubling Salary Amid Economic Hardship

By Prosper Mene

Peruvian President Dina Boluarte has ignited widespread outrage after her administration announced a decree on Wednesday, July 2, 2025, doubling her monthly salary from 15,600 soles (approximately $4,400) to 35,568 soles (about $10,067). The decision, comes as Peru grapples with poverty, rising crime, and political instability, and has drawn sharp criticism from citizens, lawmakers, and analysts, especially given Boluarte’s approval rating, which hovers at a historic low of 2-4%.

The salary increase, formalized by a government decree, was justified by Economy Minister Raúl Pérez-Reyes, who stated that Boluarte’s previous pay ranked among the lowest for Latin American presidents, only ahead of Bolivia’s. The government argued the raise aligns her salary with regional counterparts, citing a comparison of 12 Latin American countries. However, critics argue the timing is tone-deaf, with nearly 30% of Peruvians living in poverty and the nation facing a surge in gang-related violence.

“This is a mockery to a country facing serious problems,” said opposition lawmaker Jaime Quito, who announced plans to introduce legislation to reverse the raise. Fellow congressman Alex Flores supported the sentiment, stating, “Boluarte raises her salary while the country falls apart, with crime and corruption rampant.” Public reaction has been equally scathing, with Lima resident Carmen Juarez telling reporters, “She’s almost done with her term; there’s no need for this raise. She should be helping hospitals and sick children.”

Boluarte, who assumed the presidency in December 2022 following the impeachment of her predecessor Pedro Castillo, has faced relentless scrutiny. Her tenure has been marred by protests, allegations of corruption in the “Rolexgate” scandal involving undeclared luxury watches, and accusations of failing to address rising insecurity. Despite earlier denials in May 2025 that a pay raise was under consideration, a report by La República suggest the initiative came directly from Boluarte’s Presidential Office, fueling claims of opacity.

Economist Jorge Gonzáles Izquierdo called the timing “the worst possible,” given Boluarte’s near-zero approval rating and ongoing national crises. Social media has erupted with Peruvians labeling the move “outrageous” and “tone-deaf.” With general elections scheduled for April 2026, when Boluarte’s term ends, political observers warn that the decision could further erode public trust in her administration.

The controversy adds to Peru’s turbulent political landscape, which has seen six presidents since 2018.
