‎Nigeria Adopts Menstrual Health Policy to Combat Stigma and Boost Girls’ Education

By Prosper Mene

‎The Federal Government of Nigeria has adopted its first-ever National Policy on Menstrual Health and Hygiene Management (MHHM).

‎The policy, validated by stakeholders at a meeting in Abuja, aims to eliminate stigma surrounding menstruation, improve access to affordable sanitary products, and ensure girls can stay in school during their periods.

‎Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, described the policy as a transformative step toward ensuring that menstruation does not hinder the potential of women and girls. Represented by Dr. Maryam Keshinro, the minister highlighted the urgency of the initiative, noting that women aged 15 to 49 make up 25 to 30 percent of Nigeria’s population, with millions managing menstruation monthly. “Menstruation is a normal biological process that should never be a source of shame, stigma, or economic hardship,” she stated.

‎The policy will address critical challenges, including inadequate access to sanitary products, poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure, and cultural taboos that contribute to school absenteeism and health issues. A key feature of the policy is the removal of taxes on sanitary towels, a decision championed by President Bola Tinubu, which is expected to make menstrual products more affordable. The initiative also seeks to integrate menstrual health education into school curricula and gender equality programs, with a vision that by 2030, no girl in Nigeria will have to choose between managing her period and pursuing her education.

‎The minister emphasized the policy’s benefits for national development, stating, “Menstrual health is not just a women’s issue but a family, community, and national development issue.” She highlighted alarming statistics, including that 15 percent of girls aged 15 to 19 are already mothers or pregnant, and over 7.3 million adolescent girls and women suffer from undernutrition, conditions worsened by poor menstrual hygiene.

‎The policy aims to empower communities by fostering open dialogue and breaking cultural taboos. The adoption of the MHHM policy aligns Nigeria with global leaders like Kenya, Scotland, and New Zealand, which have implemented measures to provide free or affordable menstrual products and education.

‎By prioritizing menstrual health, Nigeria is taking a bold step toward ensuring that girls and women can thrive without the barriers of stigma or lack of resources.‎

‎The Federal Government called for strong collaboration across sectors and active participation from states, communities, and development partners to ensure the policy’s successful implementation.

‎Ibom Air Passenger Incident: Eyewitness Claims Crew Provoked Altercation

‎By Prosper Mene

‎An eyewitness, David Ogede, a lawyer seated next to passenger Comfort Emmanson, has come out to explain that the airline’s crew provoked the incident that led to her forceful removal from the aircraft.

The altercation, which occurred on August 10, 2025, has raised questions about airline staff conduct and passenger treatment, with viral videos showing Emmanson being escorted off the plane by security, her clothes torn and in a state of distress.

‎Ogede, speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief, recounted that the incident began before takeoff when Emmanson struggled to switch off her iPhone, explaining that its power button was faulty. While the first air hostess politely instructed passengers to turn off their phones, a second hostess adopted a confrontational tone, repeatedly demanding Emmanson comply despite her pleas for assistance. “The second air hostess told her, ‘I don’t have time for your nonsense. Just switch it off,’” Ogede said, adding that Emmanson, who admitted she could not read, felt humiliated when the hostess dismissed her request for help and mocked her inability to navigate the phone’s settings.

‎The situation escalated when Emmanson, feeling singled out, questioned the hostess’s behavior, prompting a sharp response: “You had better keep quiet, or I will deal with you.” This, Ogede stated, triggered Emmanson to react angrily, using strong language. The second hostess then retreated to the front of the plane and did not return, while tension lingered among passengers. Ogede noted that the first hostess remained professional, assisting Emmanson with tasks like stowing her belongings before landing.

‎Ibom Air, in a statement released on August 11, claimed Emmanson refused to switch off her phone, verbally abused crew members, and assaulted them, including attempting to use a fire extinguisher as a weapon. The airline imposed a lifetime ban on her and handed her over to authorities, leading to her remand at Kirikiri Correctional Centre. She was later released after intervention by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, with charges dropped.

‎However, Ogede and another eyewitness, Tunde A. Ibrahim, challenged the airline’s narrative, alleging that Emmanson was unfairly targeted. Ibrahim claimed that upon landing, crew members prevented her from disembarking, stating that security had been called, which further escalated the situation. Social media posts have fueled public outrage, with some accusing Ibom Air of mishandling the incident and drawing comparisons to a 2022 case involving Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde (KWAM 1), who faced no prosecution for allegedly disrupting a ValueJet flight.

‎The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has called for additional eyewitness accounts to investigate the matter, while the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) condemned the “inhuman treatment” of Emmanson, particularly the public exposure in viral videos. The Nigerian Bar Association and other groups have also demanded an independent probe into Ibom Air’s handling of the incident.

‎Ogede emphasized that while Emmanson’s reaction was inappropriate, the second hostess’s unprofessional conduct inflamed a manageable situation. “With a little bit of humility and humanness, things may have changed,” he said, suggesting that better training in empathy and sensitivity could prevent such incidents.

‎Ibom Air has denied responsibility for leaking the viral footage and maintains that its actions were driven by safety concerns.

Half of Nigerians Offline, Risking Digital Trade Boom, Warns Okonjo-Iweala

‎By Prosper Mene

‎Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), has raised alarm over Nigeria’s low internet penetration, with over half of the population still offline, threatening the nation’s ability to capitalize on the $4.25 trillion global digital trade market.

‎Speaking at the launch of the Women Exporters in the Digital Economy (WEIDE) Fund in Abuja on Thursday, Okonjo-Iweala highlighted that only 45% of Nigerians have internet access, significantly trailing the global average of 67%. “No nation can truly digitize without a steady supply of electricity and reliable, affordable internet,” she stated. “This gap must be closed if we are to seize the opportunities of digital trade.”

‎The WEIDE Fund, a joint initiative by the WTO, International Trade Centre (ITC), and Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), aims to empower women entrepreneurs in digital commerce.

‎ Nigeria was selected as one of four countries for the 2024 rollout, alongside Jordan, Mongolia, and the Dominican Republic. Over 67,000 Nigerian women applied, with 146 selected as beneficiaries due to the high quality of applications. Sixteen women in the “Booster Track” will receive up to $30,000 and 18 months of technical support, while 130 in the “Discovery Track” will get up to $5,000 and a year of business assistance, spanning sectors like agriculture, IT, fashion, hospitality, beauty, and manufacturing.

‎Okonjo-Iweala emphasized that Africa’s share of global digital trade remains below 1%, urging Nigeria’s Ministries of Communications, Industry, and Power to collaborate on improving connectivity and infrastructure. “When women trade internationally, they earn almost three times more than those who sell locally,” she noted, highlighting the WEIDE Fund’s role in providing tools, skills, and market access.

‎ Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, pledged government support, praising women’s “empathy” as a business strength. Dr. Dele Oye, President of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture (NACCIMA), lauded the program as a step toward Nigeria’s $1 trillion economy goal.

‎The launch coincided with Okonjo-Iweala’s visit to President Bola Tinubu, where she commended his economic stabilization efforts but urged stronger social safety nets to cushion the impact of reforms like petrol subsidy removal and foreign exchange unification, which have driven inflation and hardship.

‎Tinubu Stabilizes Nigeria’s Economy, Says Okonjo-Iweala

By Prosper Mene

‎The Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for its economic reforms, stating that they have successfully stabilized Nigeria’s economy.

‎Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, Okonjo-Iweala described the reforms as “steps in the right direction” and credited Tinubu’s team for laying a foundation for future economic growth.“We think that the President and his team have worked hard to stabilize the economy, and you cannot really improve an economy unless it’s stable,” Okonjo-Iweala said. “So, he has to be given credit for the stability of the economy.”

‎She highlighted the importance of stability as a prerequisite for economic progress, noting that the reforms have set Nigeria on a path toward recovery.

‎ ‎However, the WTO chief emphasized that the next critical steps involve fostering economic growth and implementing robust social safety nets to alleviate the hardships faced by many Nigerians due to these reforms. “What is needed next is growth. We now need to grow the economy, and we need to put in social safety nets so that people who are feeling the pinch of the reforms can also have some support to weather the hardship,” she stated.

‎ ‎Her remarks come in the context of significant policy changes under Tinubu’s administration, including the removal of fuel subsidies in May 2023, which led to a sharp increase in fuel prices and subsequent rises in the cost of living. Despite these challenges, she urged the government to focus on job creation and poverty reduction through targeted policies. “How do we build social safety nets to help Nigerians cushion the hardship they are feeling? Then, how do we grow the economy so we can create more jobs and put more money in people’s pockets? These are issues we discussed with Mr. President,” she added.

Okonjo-Iweala’s endorsement underscores the potential of Tinubu’s reforms while highlighting the urgent need for measures to support vulnerable citizens.

‎Super Falcons Still Await $100,000 Reward Promised by FG, Ajibade Reveals ‎

By Prosper Mene

‎Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade has publicly expressed frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to fulfill its promise of a $100,000 reward for each player following their triumphant victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

‎While speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Ajibade disclosed that the team has not received the pledged cash reward, alongside other promised incentives, including three-bedroom apartments and national honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON). “We have not received our money, but hopefully, it would be paid. They have not paid, all the promises, we have not received anything,” Ajibade stated.

‎The Super Falcons secured their record-extending 10th WAFCON title in a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Morocco, with standout performances from players like Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Jennifer Echegini. The team’s achievement was celebrated at a grand reception hosted by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where he praised their “indomitable spirit of resilience, determination, and courage” and announced the rewards.

‎However, months after the announcement, the promised funds and properties remain undelivered, raising questions about the administration’s priorities and the welfare of Nigerian athletes.

‎Ajibade, who was named Player of the Tournament, also noted that match bonuses remain unpaid, describing the situation as a “work in progress.” Despite her frustration, she expressed cautious optimism that the government would eventually honor its commitments.

‎The delay has drawn comparisons to similar unfulfilled promises in Nigerian sports, with public sentiment on across platforms reflecting growing discontent.

‎The Super Falcons’ situation comes in the wake of similar rewards promised to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, who also received pledges of $100,000 per player and other incentives following their recent AfroBasket triumph.

‎The recurrence of such delays has stirred calls for greater transparency and accountability in the management of sports funding in Nigeria.

‎Ajibade’s comments have heightened demands from fans and stakeholders for the Federal Government to expedite the payments and fulfill its promises to the Super Falcons, who continue to inspire millions across the nation
