An Ekiti State High Court in Ado Ekiti has sentenced 33-year-old Olamilekan Ajewole to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl. The landmark ruling, delivered on Monday, shows the judiciary’s commitment to addressing sexual violence against minors in Nigeria.
The court heard that Ajewole committed the crime on August 14, 2023, in Ado Ekiti, luring the minor to his residence under false pretenses before assaulting her. The prosecution, led by State Counsel Julius Ajibare, presented compelling evidence, including medical reports and witness testimonies, proving the defendant’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt. The case was prosecuted under Section 31(2) of the Child’s Rights Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012, which prescribes life imprisonment for such offenses.
Justice Blessing Ajileye, in her judgment, described the act as “heinous” and a grave violation of the victim’s rights, citing the need to protect vulnerable children. “The defendant’s actions have caused irreparable harm, and this sentence serves as a deterrent to others,” she stated. Ajewole, who pleaded not guilty, showed no remorse during the trial, according to court records.
The victim, whose identity is protected, received medical and psychological support following the incident. Advocacy groups, including the Ekiti State Gender-Based Violence Task Force, hailed the verdict as a step toward justice for survivors of sexual assault. “This ruling sends a strong message that perpetrators will face the full weight of the law,” said a spokesperson for the task force.
Ekiti State has been at the forefront of combating gender-based violence, with recent initiatives to strengthen legal frameworks and support systems for victims.
