Prof. Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, has reportedly registered as a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun State. The development, confirmed by political sources close to the family, occurred on Tuesday at Ibogun Ward 11 in Ifo Local Government Area.

Hon. Biodun Ajayi, a former chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government and a known associate of the Obasanjo family, made the disclosure to journalists. According to Ajayi, Prof. Obasanjo completed her online registration as a member of the ruling party during the ongoing membership drive.

A former House of Representatives member from the area, speaking anonymously, corroborated the registration, describing it as accurate. Efforts to obtain an official confirmation from the Ogun State APC leadership were unsuccessful, with the party’s Director of Publicity, Mr. Femi Nuberu, stating only that the membership registration remains open to all eligible Nigerians aged 18 and above, without directly addressing the specific claim.

The move has sparked significant speculation in Ogun State’s political circles, especially ahead of the 2027 general elections. Prof. Obasanjo, a former senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District (2007–2011) under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ex-Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, has largely stayed out of active politics in recent years. However, her re-emergence follows the appearance of campaign-style billboards bearing her name and image in parts of Abeokuta late last year, with messages like “In Ogun State, we know ourselves. Sen (Prof) Iyabo Obasanjo. Omo wa ni, eniyan wa ni, ara wa ni.”

Political analysts note the surprise element in her reported alignment with the APC, given her father’s critical stance toward the party and his support for the Labour Party’s Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election. Observers had previously speculated she might return to the PDP or join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party associated with her father’s political influence in the past.

This development adds to the growing list of high-profile shifts in Ogun politics as various figures position themselves for future contests, including potential gubernatorial ambitions. No official statement has been issued by Prof. Obasanjo herself regarding her intentions or any political aspirations.

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested two female suspects for allegedly trafficking a 16-year-old girl to Ghana.

The suspects, identified as Uzoma Nwabueze and Precious Monday, were apprehended on the evening of January 26, 2026, in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State. The arrest followed credible, technology-driven intelligence regarding the disappearance of the minor, Miss Oluebube Chukwuma, from the same community.

According to the police spokesperson, during interrogation, the suspects confessed to their involvement in the girl’s disappearance and revealed that she is currently in Ghana. The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka for further investigation.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu has directed operatives to trace the victim’s location in Ghana, identify all individuals connected to the trafficking, and pursue additional arrests. Efforts are underway to secure the safe return and rescue of the minor.

This incident shows the persistent challenge of cross-border human trafficking in the region, often targeting vulnerable young girls under false pretenses of better opportunities. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to combating such crimes and urged the public to report suspicious activities involving minors promptly.

The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.

Women need to live alone before marriage’– Nollywood Actress Teniola Aladese ‎ ‎ ‎

By Prosper Mene

Nollywood actress and producer Teniola Aladese has sparked widespread discussion with her candid advice that many women should experience living independently before entering marriage, arguing it helps build self-awareness, set boundaries, and avoid regrets in relationships.

In a recent episode of the That’s What She Said vodcast/podcast, the actress shared her perspective on the common cultural pattern in Nigeria where women transition directly from their parents’ home to their husband’s without an interim phase of solo living. She emphasized that this lack of independence often leads to surprises and challenges once married.

“A lot of women just go from their family’s houses to their husband’s house,” Aladese stated. “But they don’t particularly know what they like, they don’t know what kind of trait their husband-to-be has. So they are shocked when they enter into the home and they see some mannerisms that they haven’t experienced before.”

She continued: “But I feel like when you live alone before getting married, you get to know yourself, you get to know what you like, you get to know the nonsense you would take and the nonsense you would not take. But when you just enter into marriage without any experience of living on your own, that is when everything starts shocking you and regrets creep in.”

The 32-year-old actress, born on September 18, 1993, in Lagos State (the sixth of six children), studied Mass Communication at Covenant University, Ota. She has built a multifaceted career in Nollywood, starting behind the scenes as a production coordinator and line producer on projects like Africa Magic Original Films and Jemeji (where she also acted as Akweyon). She gained prominence for her role as the villainous Folashade “FK” Kuku in the TV series Unbroken, and has appeared in films and series such as Fade, Her, Déjà Vu, Lara of Lagos, and Perfectly Flawed. Aladese has also worked as a casting director and consultant.

Her comments, shared widely across social media platforms including Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and blogs have ignited debates online. Many fans and commentators praised her for promoting self-discovery and independence, while others weighed in on cultural norms around marriage and gender roles in Nigerian society.

Aladese’s statement aligns with growing conversations in entertainment circles about personal growth, mental preparedness for marriage, and challenging traditional expectations. As one of Nollywood’s rising talents known for her thoughtful insights both on and off screen, her views continue to resonate with audiences navigating modern relationships.

The movie in question is Behind The Scenes, which Akindele wrote, directed, and produced under her Funke Akindele Network banner. Released in December 2025, the film has achieved massive commercial success, surpassing the ₦2 billion mark at the box office (with some reports citing even higher figures like ₦2.4 billion), making it one of the highest-grossing Nigerian films ever and a landmark for the Nollywood industry.

He highlighted Akindele’s dedication, grit, and vision as setting new standards for Nollywood and proving the global potential of local stories.

Behind The Scenes continues its theatrical run in cinemas across Nigeria, as well as in international markets including the UK, USA, and Canada. The film is being lauded for its creative storytelling, emotional depth, and powerful message, resonating strongly with audiences and contributing to the growing wave of successful Nigerian productions.

This endorsement from Governor Sanwo-Olu further cements Behind The Scenes as not just a box-office hit, but a culturally significant work that’s inspiring both creators and viewers alike.

Yeni Kuti Declares ‘Wizkid Is My Friend’ Amid Escalating Feud with Seun Kuti

By Prosper Mene

Yeni Kuti, the eldest daughter of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has broken her silence on the heated online feud between her brother, Seun Kuti, and Grammy-winning superstar Wizkid, affectionately calling the singer her “padi” (friend) and expressing her deep affection for him despite the controversy.

The dispute erupted earlier this week when Seun Kuti accused Wizkid’s fanbase (known as Wizkid FC) of disrespecting their late father’s legacy by comparing Wizkid favorably to Fela or claiming superiority in influence. The exchange quickly escalated into personal insults on social media, with both artists trading barbs and drawing in fans, celebrities, and public figures.

Speaking on TVC’s morning show Your View on Thursday, Yeni Kuti emphasized her longstanding personal connection to Wizkid, recalling his early days in the music scene. “I love Wizkid a lot. You know, Wizkid is my padi now,” she said. “When two giants fight, it’s the grass that suffers. I refuse to enter some of the insults that they are hauling because I love Wizkid a lot. Wizkid is my padi now and my so friend. We have come a long way together. I remember when we started that shrine, he was a backup singer at the shrine during Felabration.”

Yeni expressed disappointment that the situation spiraled, particularly noting that Wizkid could have intervened earlier to curb escalating insults directed at Fela. “All the insults people have been hurling towards Fela, I wish he (Wizkid) had put a stop to it, but he didn’t,” she added. She also highlighted the broader impact, warning that the public spat reflects poorly on Nigeria rather than just the Kuti family. “You’re dirtying Nigeria, not Fela’s family,” she stated, urging peace and unity, especially with Fela’s legacy set to be celebrated at the upcoming Grammy Awards.

Yeni stressed her refusal to take sides aggressively, prioritizing her friendship with Wizkid and the shared history between him and the Kuti family through events like Felabration at the New Afrika Shrine. Her comments have caused mixed reactions online, with some praising her maturity and calls for peace, while others debate the origins of the conflict and loyalty to Fela’s heritage.

The feud continues to generate buzz across Nigerian entertainment circles, highlighting tensions around legacy, generational shifts in Afrobeat/Afropop, and fan-driven comparisons. Neither Wizkid nor Seun Kuti has publicly responded directly to Yeni’s statements as of press time.

FCT Police Arraign 11 Suspects Over Murder of Arise News Journalist and Security Guard

By Prosper Mene

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arraigned 11 suspects in connection with the tragic murder of Arise News journalist Somtochukwu Christella Maduagwu and security guard Barnabas Danlami during a violent armed robbery incident.

The suspects appeared before Justice Mohammed Idris at the FCT High Court in Jabi, Abuja, on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. They pleaded not guilty to a nine-count charge that includes criminal conspiracy, armed robbery, and murder.

The arraigned individuals are: Shamsu Hassan, Sani Sirajo, Hassan Isah, Abubakar Alkamu, Abdulsalam Saleh, Suleiman Badamasi, Zaharadeen Mohammed, Musa Umar (aka “Small”), Mashkur Jamil, Suleiman Sani, and Abubakar Usman.

The incident occurred in the early hours of September 29, 2025, at Unique Apartments, Katampe Extension, Mabushi, Abuja. Armed robbers invaded the premises, leading to the deaths of Maduagwu—a 29-year-old anchor, reporter, producer, and barrister with ARISE News and Danlami, the estate security guard on duty.

Initial police investigations revealed that Maduagwu fell from the third floor of her building while attempting to escape the attackers, while Danlami was fatally shot. One suspect, Shamsu Hassan, reportedly confessed during earlier interrogations to firing the shot that killed the security guard.

Following the robbery, the FCT Police, through intelligence-led operations involving the Scorpion Squad and digital forensics, arrested 12 suspects in October 2025. Weapons (including a locally fabricated AK-47, pistol, and pump-action gun), ammunition, stolen mobile phones, and other items were recovered. Authorities noted that some arms were sourced from the Niger Republic, highlighting concerns over cross-border illicit arms trafficking.

The case has now advanced to formal court proceedings, with the matter adjourned to February 2026 for further hearings. The police and court actions underscore ongoing efforts to ensure justice for the victims and address armed robbery threats in the capital.

This development brings a measure of progress in a case that caused widespread outrage over journalist safety and insecurity in Abuja.

Deji Adeleke Breaks Silence: Accuses Kemi Olunloyo of Impersonating Child in Davido Paternity Saga

By Prosper Mene

Billionaire businessman and philanthropist Dr Deji Adeleke held a rare press conference on Wednesday to publicly address, for the first time, the persistent paternity controversy surrounding his youngest son, Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke (known as Davido), and a young girl named Anuoluwapo from Ibadan.

Dr Adeleke firmly dismissed the allegations that Davido is the biological father of Anuoluwapo, describing them as false and attributing their prolonged circulation to alleged impersonation and misinformation online, particularly by controversial social media commentator Kemi Olunloyo.

The dispute dates back to claims by Ibadan-based woman Ayo Labinjo, who alleged she had a brief encounter with Davido during one of his performances in the city years ago, resulting in the birth of Anuoluwapo. She has maintained that Davido abandoned responsibility for the child.

The issue resurfaced recently when an Instagram account purportedly belonging to the now-teenage Anuoluwapo appealed for another DNA test. Davido responded by stating that five separate DNA tests had already been conducted over the years, all returning negative results for paternity.

In his address to journalists, Dr Adeleke explained that he was compelled to speak out due to the recurring nature of the claims, which he said have caused unnecessary distress despite scientific evidence to the contrary.

“I am Deji Adeleke, father of five children, three boys and two girls. David Adeleke, known as Davido, is the youngest in our family,” he stated. “This is my first time addressing the press, and it’s solely because this issue keeps resurfacing annually regarding a young girl named Anuoluwapo in Ibadan, with Kemi Olunloyo continually alleging that David is her father.”

Dr Adeleke recounted first learning of the allegation in 2014, when he received a DHL package from Ibadan containing photos of Davido with the child, a birth certificate listing “Adeleke David” as the father, and a letter from the child’s grandmother. The grandmother, a widow raising two daughters alone, requested a paternity test, not for marriage or financial gain, but for confirmation and responsibility if proven true.

Moved by the appeal, Dr Adeleke said he contacted the family immediately, assuring them he would welcome the child as his granddaughter if confirmed. He arranged a DNA test at Vedic Lifecare Hospital in Lagos, with samples collected via saliva in the presence of both families and analyzed at a laboratory in South Africa.

Dr Adeleke and the child’s grandmother personally collected the results, which showed a 0.00% probability of paternity, conclusively ruling out Davido as the father.

To eliminate any doubt, Dr Adeleke said he personally funded two additional tests at other reputable facilities while covering the family’s accommodation and logistics in Lagos. All tests yielded the same negative outcome.

“The grandmother was emotional when the first result came out,” he recalled. “I told her mistakes can happen, so let’s do more tests. Science is clear.”

He declined calls to release the DNA reports publicly, citing privacy, security, and legal risks associated with exposing DNA profiles. “It is dangerous for anyone’s DNA to be in the public domain,” he emphasized.

Dr Adeleke stressed that the Adeleke family has no motive to deny a child, noting he already has 14 grandchildren. “What is one more? Is it that I cannot afford to care for her? But there is science, and science is clear.”

He concluded by urging the public to disregard misleading online narratives, accusing Kemi Olunloyo of impersonating the child and her mother for years to perpetuate the claims.

The press conference comes amid ongoing public debate, with conflicting accounts from involved parties. However, Dr Adeleke’s detailed testimony and emphasis on multiple independent tests aim to provide final clarity on the matter.

Ondo Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa Empowers 200 Women with ICT and Vocational Tools

By Prosper Mene

In taking step towards promoting women’s economic independence and poverty reduction, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has empowered 200 women with vocational tools and startup resources following their successful completion of skill acquisition training.

The initiative, part of the O’Datiwa Skill Up a Woman Initiative (also referred to as O’Datiwa Skill Acquisition Programme), culminated in a graduation ceremony for the first batch of 2025 trainees held in Akure on Tuesday. The beneficiaries underwent six months of intensive training in various trades, equipping them with practical skills to foster self-reliance and entrepreneurship.

The training covered diverse areas, including Information and Communication Technology (ICT), tailoring (fashion designing), soap making, catering services (including confectionaries and baking), interior decoration, and other vocational skills. To ensure immediate application of their newly acquired expertise, the state government presented the graduates with relevant startup tools and equipment. These included laptops for ICT trainees, sewing machines for fashion designers, flour mixers and ovens for bakers and caterers, as well as grants for some participants to serve as startup capital.

Governor Aiyedatiwa, represented at the event, reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to expanding skill acquisition programmes as a key strategy for job creation and economic empowerment, particularly among women. He emphasized that the programme transforms unemployed individuals into skilled, confident, and self-sustaining entrepreneurs, aligning with broader goals of poverty alleviation and gender equality.

The Ondo State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Seun Osamaye, highlighted the transformative impact of the initiative. She noted that the government has demonstrated that women require genuine empowerment, through skills and resources, rather than mere handouts or tokenism. “Women are multipliers with the ability to invest wisely when empowered,” she stated, adding that the 200 beneficiaries can now sustain themselves and contribute to building future generations without facing ridicule or dependency.

This empowerment drive shows Governor Aiyedatiwa’s people-centered “OUR EASE” policy thrust, which prioritizes inclusive development, youth and women engagement, and sustainable livelihoods. The programme is expected to boost local economies by enabling participants to establish small businesses, generate income, and support their families.

The Edo State Government, under Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo, has commissioned the reconstructed Oredo Girls Secondary School in Benin City, marking a significant milestone in the state’s ongoing education reform efforts.

On Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Governor Okpebholo officially unveiled the fully rebuilt facility located at Awo Street, off First East Circular Road. The school, which had suffered years of abandonment and dilapidation, has been transformed into a modern learning environment. This redevelopment brings an end to prolonged neglect, restoring dignity to public education and providing students with conducive classrooms and essential facilities.

The commissioning shows the governor’s commitment to revitalizing public schools across Edo State. Since assuming office, his administration has prioritized infrastructure rehabilitation as part of broader reforms, including the declaration of a state of emergency on public education in March 2025. Similar efforts have seen the reconstruction of other institutions, such as Army Day Secondary School and Evbareke Secondary School, with over 68 schools rebuilt or rehabilitated in the administration’s first year. These interventions have attracted new enrollments, with some rehabilitated schools gaining hundreds of students from private institutions due to improved quality.

This project aligns with the governor’s “EduRescue Initiative” and Five-Point Agenda, aimed at equipping students with quality education, vocational skills, and future-ready opportunities. It underscores the administration’s focus on practical governance, ensuring that Edo’s children learn in safe, inspiring spaces rather than decaying structures.

The unveiling has been celebrated as a promise kept, with residents and education stakeholders praising the swift action to restore abandoned facilities. As one of the recent achievements in the state’s education turnaround, the reconstructed Oredo Girls Secondary School stands as a symbol of renewed hope and investment in the next generation.
