The Nigerian Army has detained a female soldier stationed at a military facility in Lagos following allegations of theft, according to a statement released by the Army’s Directorate of Public Relations on Tuesday. The soldier, whose name and rank have not been disclosed to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation, is currently in military custody as authorities probe the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Army’s spokesperson, provided details in a press briefing, stating that the soldier was apprehended after a formal complaint was lodged regarding the disappearance of valuable personal belongings from personnel within the barracks. “The Nigerian Army upholds the highest standards of discipline and professionalism. Following a report of suspected theft, the implicated soldier was detained, and we have initiated a comprehensive investigation to uncover the truth,” Nwachukwu said.
Sources close to the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the alleged theft involved items such as electronics, cash, and personal effects belonging to fellow soldiers in the barracks. The incident reportedly came to light after a series of complaints from affected personnel, prompting the military police to conduct a preliminary inquiry. The inquiry led to the identification of the female soldier as a person of interest, resulting in her immediate detention.
The Nigerian Army has emphasized that the investigation will be thorough and impartial, with a commitment to following due process. “We assure all parties involved that no stone will be left unturned. If the soldier is found guilty, she will face the full weight of military justice in accordance with our regulations,” Nwachukwu added. He also urged the public to refrain from speculation, as premature conclusions could undermine the investigation.
The Nigerian Army has recently introduced measures to enhance accountability, including regular audits of facilities and stricter oversight of personnel conduct.
The detained soldier is being held at a military facility in Lagos, pending the outcome of the investigation. Authorities have not provided a timeline for the completion of the probe but have promised to release further details as they become available.
The Nigerian Army has called for calm and reiterated its commitment to transparency and fairness in handling the case. Updates are expected as the investigation progresses, with the military assuring stakeholders that justice will be served.
